Highest Quality Wood

Olive wood is one of the hardest woods to sculpt. Olive wood is also protected by the Italian government therefore it is difficult to find pieces large enough for sculpting. This rare and revered wood is a perfect compliment for the subject of this sculpture. Rey chose this wood because of its exquisite veining which adds to the depth of the Indian.

ARTIST INFO

One of the things that struck us first was that Rey works in olive wood. It is one of the hardest woods and therefore most sculptors generally shy away from it. But Rey doesn’t, even though it is extremely difficult to find. Olive trees in Italy are highly protected by government regulations and the wood is coveted, so finding pieces large enough to sculpt can often be a challenge in itself.
