Beyond the Mainstream: Unearthing Exceptional Etna Wines in Sicily

Updated: Jun 16

One of our favorite things to do when we are in Italy is to seek out special wineries and olive oils. We like to discover the lesser known places, especially the ones who ship to the USA and Canada. Sicily, especially the area around Etna, is producing spectacular wines now, yet not much is known about them in the mainstream. One of our friends suggested we check out I Biondi, their wines are fantastic, and their vineyard and accomodations are stunning. We couldn't think of a better way to spend a day in Sicily.

In fact, for those seeking an authentic and immersive viticultural experience, a visit to I Biondi winery is located on the slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, offering an unparalleled opportunity to connect with a storied winemaking tradition and the unique terroir that defines it. Nestled amidst ancient lava flows and meticulously cultivated vineyards, I Biondi provides not only exceptional wines but also the chance to experience the very essence of Etna through their welcoming accommodations.

The Biondi family's connection to these volcanic lands runs deep, tracing back through generations. Their history is intricately woven with the challenging yet rewarding cultivation of vines on Etna. I Biondi is particularly renowned for its dedication to indigenous grape varieties and a profound respect for the traditional winemaking practices of the region. This commitment to heritage, combined with a forward-thinking approach, has cemented their reputation as a standard-bearer for Etna wines.

A Tranquil Getaway at I Biondi

A stay at I Biondi's estate offers a tranquil retreat from the everyday, seamlessly blending rustic charm with modern comforts. Guests can expect thoughtfully appointed accommodations that often reflect the local architectural style, creating an authentic and cozy atmosphere. The accomodation at I Biondi was created in the rooms where they used to press the grapes. The hole that once collected the juice was left in place to maintain the history of the space, along with plexiglass viewing areas to see how the juice flowed through the building to be collected to begin the second step of the wine production. Imagine waking up each morning to breathtaking panoramic views of Mount Etna, sometimes dramatically clear against the Sicilian sky, at other times softly veiled in wispy clouds, providing an ever-changing and captivating backdrop. The serene atmosphere, punctuated only by the sounds of nature and the distant rustle of leaves, fosters a deep sense of relaxation and connection to the environment. Whether enjoying a morning coffee on a private terrace or unwinding in the beautiful private pool after a day of exploration, the accommodation at I Biondi provides a comfortable and deeply immersive base for discovering the region.

I Biondi's Exceptional Etna Wines in Sicily

The true highlight of an I Biondi visit, however, is the exploration of their exquisite wines. The volcanic soil of Etna, rich in minerals, imparts a distinctive character to the grapes grown there. I Biondi specializes in showcasing the unique expressions of Etna's native varietals:

  • Nerello Mascalese: This noble red grape is the star of Etna, yielding wines of remarkable elegance and complexity. I Biondi's Nerello Mascalese wines are typically characterized by vibrant red fruit notes, delicate floral aromas, often with a subtle hint of volcanic minerality and well-integrated tannins, making them both approachable in youth and capable of significant aging.

  • Carricante: The dominant white grape of Etna, Carricante produces wines known for their crisp acidity, saline notes, and often a flinty or citrusy character. I Biondi's Carricante wines beautifully reflect the fresh mountain air and mineral-rich soil, offering a refreshing and sophisticated white wine experience.

Beyond these flagship varieties, I Biondi may also cultivate other native grapes or experiment with unique blends, each expressing a facet of the Etna terroir. Tastings are conducted with knowledgeable staff who can guide you through the nuances of each wine, providing insights into the winemaking process and the characteristics imparted by the volcanic environment.

The quality and authenticity of I Biondi's wines have not gone unnoticed. The winery, particularly under the current generation of Ciro Biondi and his wife Stef, has successfully revived the family's winemaking tradition, reclaiming a legacy of excellence. In the early 1900s, with partners, their wines, labeled 'Biondi - Lanzafame', earned a collection of medals and awards at prestigious fairs including Casalmonferato 1913, Paris 1914, Lyons 1914, Cuneo 1914, and Milan 1914. They were also included in the 'Grande Libro d'oro' (By Royal Appointment to King Vittorio Emmanuele III). More recently, their dedication has led to multiple Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchieri awards for their red wines, notably their "Outis" cuvée, which has been a consistent recipient of this prestigious accolade. Such recognitions underscore their commitment to crafting wines that truly embody the unique potential of Etna's volcanic terroir.

In addition to their acclaimed wines, I Biondi also produces high-quality extra virgin olive oil. The olive groves, often intermingled with the vineyards, benefit from the same unique volcanic soil and Mediterranean climate, resulting in an oil with distinct character – often noted for its vibrant color, peppery finish, and fruity aromas.
